Knitting

Written by Jay on October 5, 2004 – 9:45 am

My oldest daughter has just begun 3rd grade (Grade 3 for you Egyptian
readers.) She moved into a new “Castle,” which is like a class room,
but has no desks or books, but does have rabbits and lizards and
posters of Einstein with sunglasses on the wall. (It’s not a normal
school.) This “Castle” is the “Spanish” Castle, because the kids all
learn Spanish every day so that one day they too can order a “cerveza”
without sounding like a tourist. They also have the choice to learn
other things like knitting. I know, I thought it was strange too, but
knitting is all the rage these days.

My uber-hip 3rd grader decided she wanted to learn knitting. The thing
with knitting is that, the first few times you look at someone’s
knitting project, it sort of resembles string tied together in an
intricate fashion. In the case of 3rd graders, it’s sometimes not even
intricate. So, after 3 weeks of “knitting,” when I wasn’t beginning
to see signs of a sweater, or beer cozy, I broke down and asked,
“Sweetie, what are you knitting?”

“It’s a cat toy,” she replied. “Cats love yarn.” I didn’t mean to
laugh. I certainly didn’t mean to laugh so hard I had to sit down.
This kid has vision. I mean, a cat toy is done before it’s started,
and you can add more, or just stop at any time, and it’s still a cat
toy. Absolutely no pressure. Absolutely brilliant. Sure, I could
focus on the fact that, last week, she may have had a sweater in mind,
but got frustrated, and gave up. But no, I decided that being able to
recognize limitations, and adapt, are skills that she will carry with
her the rest of her life. Plus, she’s right. Cats do love yarn.
