Shiny and New

Written by Jay on November 16, 2007 – 9:04 pm

willy Shiny and NewI feel a little like Willy Wonka on the day that, after years of living in solitude, he opened his factory to five children and their chaperons I’m sure he stood looking in the mirror that morning thinking – “they’re going to think I’m weird,” “what if they don’t like the Oompa Loompas,” “what if one of them gets injured or falls in the chocolate river.”

I’m having similar thoughts. I’ve been blogging for a long time, but all the while in relative safety and obscurity. But, I want my writing to reach a larger audience. Not larger people, just more people. So, I recently decided to step out of the shadows and start a new blog with potential to reach more people.

It’s been an extremely entertaining week. There are so many fun toys to play with when building a blog. Plus, I love new things, so to have something new that is all mine has been a joy. But, I am not without reservations. It’s a pretty common fear for folks who create things – if you don’t show your work to anyone, no one can hate it. But, no one can love it either, so what’s the point.

Lastly, the decision to have a blog that is essentially about nothing was a difficult one. It’s not about nothing – it’s about everything. But, sometimes everything looks like nothing, if you are too close. To put a finer point on it – it is about living in this world and doing the things that we all do and talking about the things we all talk about. I could have created a blog aimed at the 36 year old man with two kids and a wonderful wife who likes his job and enjoys reading, writing and playing guitar, but that might limit my audience just a little. Plus, how boring would that be?

I struggled a little with defining the site. I know what it is, but I could not make the words come out in a way that pleased me until I had to write a description for another site. Here is an excerpt.

“Unfocused Content takes the concept of a personal blog - a typically uninteresting account of one’s life - and turns it on it’s ear. (The concept’s ear, not the life’s, or the blog’s.) It is at once a well written look at life from a humorous and unique perspective, and an almost parody of the pro blog with it’s narrow focus and “advice” slant. The author is a classically trained blogger with 5 years of experience.

That about sums up my idea, I think. So, welcome. Thanks for stopping by. Come back soon, if you get the chance. I have a ton of great ideas for the upcoming weeks, so it should be pretty entertaining.
